The Club has involved itself in many local activities relating to Amateur Radio. For many years, until 2000, we organised and ran the Bristol Radio Rally until it became clear that the attendances at smaller rallies were in decline.
We take part in Amateur Radio Contests, mounting an annual entry in the VHF National Field Day event taking place over the first weekend in July each year.
We have participated in a number of Special Events, including:
- Transmission 2006 – A sponsored event to raise money for the RAIBC
- Mills on the Air in May from Saltford Brass Mill on the banks of the River Avon in Saltford between Bristol and Bath supporting SPAB National Mills Weekend
- International Lighthouses and Lightships on the Air in August from former Lightvessel 55, the ‘John Sebastian’ in Bathurst Basin, home to the Cabot Cruising Club in support of Association of Lighthouse Keepers International Lighthouse Heritage Weekend
- Railways on the Air in September from the Somerset and Dorset Railway Heritage Trust in Midsomer Norton celebrating the anniversary of the first steam powered passenger railway which took place on 27th September 1825 on a line from Darlington to Stockton
In past years a group of the more active or adventurous members undertake a pilgrimage to Lundy Island in the Bristol Channel to activate this barren lump of granite for the rest of the worlds amateur population by running a special event station GB2BLE. More recently attention has been turned to other Landmark properties within the UK mainland such as Clytha Castle, and also a trip to Spain.
More details of these activities can be found on the subsidiary pages.
